How to Win a Religious Victory with Byzantium

Byzantium is the rare civilization that can pursue a Religious Victory through open warfare rather than peaceful missionary spread, since combat wins against non-believers spread its religion automatically.

The Approach

Found a religion, then go to war deliberately — defeating enemy or city-state units near cities that don't yet follow your religion spreads it to them directly, without needing to send an Apostle or Missionary at all. Tagma units get a real combat bonus tied to this same religious identity, so your military and religious game plans reinforce each other rather than competing for resources.

Key Steps

  • Pick fights near cities you want converted — the religion-spread-on-combat-win mechanic only helps if you're fighting where it matters.
  • Build Hippodromes in your front-line cities — the free Heavy Cavalry unit it grants pays for part of the district itself.
  • Don't abandon standard religious tools (Apostles, Missionaries) entirely — the combat-spread mechanic is a powerful supplement, not a full replacement.
