Civilization VI · Religious Victory

Religious Victory: The Complete Guide

Religious Victory asks for something no other win condition does: convert the majority of every civilization's population, including your own rivals', to your faith — through pressure, missionaries, and the occasional theological argument.

What you actually need to win
  • Found a religion early — being second or third to the Pantheon stage can cost you the whole game
  • The majority of the population in every civilization following your faith, not just your own cities
  • Apostles or Inquisitors ready to defend against rival religions spreading back into your territory

How Religious Victory Works

Religious pressure spreads passively based on your Holy Sites' output, trade routes, and proximity to cities that don't yet follow your faith — but passive pressure alone is rarely fast enough to win outright. Missionaries and Apostles actively push your religion into contested or rival cities, and Apostles can also debate rival religious units to slow down anyone competing with you for the same civilizations.

The further behind you start, the harder this path gets — founding a religion requires reaching a Pantheon and then a Great Prophet before your rivals do, so speed in the early game matters more here than in almost any other victory type.

Strategy by Phase

Early Game

Race for a Pantheon and a Religion

Prioritize Faith generation immediately — a Holy Site adjacent to mountains or a natural wonder is often worth rushing before anything else.

Mid Game

Pick Beliefs That Snowball

Favor beliefs that boost Missionary and Apostle strength, or that generate more Faith from spreading — the compounding effect matters more than any single strong belief.

Late Game

Defend and Finish the Job

Use Apostles to debate away rival religions in contested cities, and don't stop once you're ahead — a majority in every civilization is required, not just most of them.

Byzantium, Arabia, and Spain are all built around this path — see our Best Civs by Playstyle guide for the full breakdown.

Common Mistakes

Founding a religion too late

If every Pantheon and religion slot fills up before you get there, this victory path is effectively closed for the rest of the game.

Stopping at "mostly converted"

The win condition needs a majority in every civilization — a few holdout cities can stall you indefinitely.

Leaving missionaries undefended

Rival Apostles can debate away your religious presence in contested cities if you're not actively defending it.
