Kongo

Kongo builds toward a Culture Victory through Relics, Artifacts, and Great Works rather than trade routes — a genuine "tall" alternative in a game whose default meta favors going wide.

Unique Ability

Nkisi: each Relic, Artifact, and Sculpture (including Heroic Relics) grants +2 Food, +2 Production, +1 Faith, and +4 Gold, increases Great Artist, Great Musician, and Great Merchant point generation, and lets the Palace hold five Great Works instead of the usual number.

Unique Unit: Ngao Mbeba

The Ngao Mbeba replaces the Swordsman, with a significant Combat Strength bonus when defending against ranged units, no Movement or Sight penalty in Forest or Rainforest, and no Iron required to build.

Unique Infrastructure: Mbanza

The Mbanza replaces the Neighborhood district and can only be built on Woods or Rainforest tiles. It grants Housing, Food, and Gold regardless of the tile's Appeal rating, and spawns a free Apostle when completed in a city with a dominant Religion.

How to Play Kongo

  • Prioritize Archaeological Museums in every city — a fully stocked one is worth +6 Food, +6 Production, +3 Faith, and +12 Gold per turn on top of its Culture and Tourism output.
  • Kongo's Faith generation is genuinely weak without a Holy Site — lean on Relics, resources like Dyes and Tobacco, and your Pantheon rather than expecting a strong religious game.
  • Build the Terracotta Army early so Archaeologists can safely plunder Artifacts from other civilizations' lands.
