Civilization VII · Antiquity Age

Maurya India

Maurya India runs an economy built on managed Happiness — deliberately generating a surplus and then converting it into Science or Gold, rather than treating Happiness as just a problem to avoid.

Unique Ability

"Dhamma Thambhā" (the civilization's ability was reworked in the 1.4.0 update from an earlier version called Dhamma Lipi) increases Happiness on Happiness, Military, and Science Buildings, growing further in the Modern Age, and fully heals Land Units when you enter a Celebration. Its Antiquity Age Apex tier converts excess Happiness in Cities into Science, while a later tier converts excess Happiness into Gold instead — letting you choose which yield to prioritize as the game develops.

Unique Unit

The Purabhettarah is a unique Chariot-replacement with +5 Combat Strength against Fortified Districts, at the cost of lower Movement than the standard unit. The Nagarika is a unique Settler that grants +2 Happiness to a new Settlement's City Hall the moment it's founded.

Unique Infrastructure

The Dharamshala and Vihara are Maurya's unique buildings, combining into the Matha Unique Quarter, which adds a Happiness percentage bonus to the whole settlement. The associated Wonder must be placed on a Plains tile, with increased Production toward its construction.

How to Play Maurya India

  • Build toward a genuine Happiness surplus rather than just staying non-negative — that surplus is what converts into Science or Gold, so treat it as a resource to maximize, not a bar to keep above zero.
  • Time your Celebrations around planned offensives — the free full heal on Land Units means going on the attack right as a Celebration starts costs you nothing in recovery time.
  • Don't dismiss this civ as slow to start — its ceiling is high once you understand how to route Happiness into whichever yield your game plan needs.
