Civilization VII · Antiquity Age

Maya

Maya turns Vegetated terrain from an obstacle other civilizations clear away into an actual strategic asset — a Science-and-defense identity built around forest and jungle rather than around it.

Unique Ability

"Skies of Itsamna" grants the Palace increased Science for adjacent Vegetated terrain.

Unique Unit

The Hul'che is a unique Ranged unit that can see through Vegetation and isn't slowed by Vegetated tiles, making Maya's forests a home-field advantage rather than a hindrance. The Jaguar Slayer is a unique Reconnaissance unit that can initiate combat and lay a Trap that immobilizes and damages any enemy unit that steps on it — genuinely strong for early-game exploration and border defense at once.

Unique Infrastructure

The Jalaw is a unique Happiness building that grants a Culture adjacency bonus to Quarters.

How to Play Maya

  • Settle and expand through Vegetated terrain rather than clearing it — Maya's entire identity depends on keeping forest and jungle intact around your cities.
  • Build at least two Jaguar Slayers early to maximize early Discoveries and lock down your borders with their Trap ability before rivals can threaten you.
  • Pair Hul'che units with your Vegetated terrain specifically — their unique traversal makes them far more mobile there than any rival's units.
